Prof. Dr. med. Jürgen Scharhag

Prof. Dr. med. Jürgen Scharhag is head of the Department of Sports Medicine, Exercise Physiology and Prevention at the Centre for Sports Science at the University of Vienna. He studied at the Johannes-Gutenberg-University in Mainz, where he also started his clinical education as a specialist in cardiology, which he completed at the Department of Cardiology at the University Clinic of Heidelberg. His sports medical education he received at the Institute for Sports and Preventive Medicine at Saarland University, where he also was deputy medical director, and founded the working group of sports cardiology in the German Society of Cardiology. From 2017-2018 he was managing senior physician at the Center for Prevention and Sports Medicine at the Technical University of Munich. His research focus is on the effects of sports on the heart (esp. athlete’s heart), and in earlier years also on the immune system. During his career, Prof. Scharhag took care of athletes at the Olympic Training Centers in Saarbrücken, Potsdam and Munich as well as in various national teams (rowing, triathlon, football) at international competitions and training camps.
