Free circulating DNA (cfDNA) is a highly responsive stress marker increasing 2-fold during psychological stress up to 100-fold during a marathon. In hospitalized COVID-19 patients we and others have recently measured up to 1000-fold increased values. Here I will present on the potential of cfDNA to predict hard endpoints of intensive care patients and how novel rapid quantification approaches could facilitate treatment and patient management.
